Have Scientists Found a Cure for Baldness?

Sep 3, 2011 at 1:21 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Stress, pregnancy, genetics, and disease...all of these can lead to hair loss. Some of these factors can be avoided, while others are inevitable. But have researchers finally found a cure for thinning hair and baldness?

Not yet, unfortunately. But they're close.

An article published on Forbes.com outlines a recent study conducted by researchers at Yale. The researchers discovered the chemical signal that leads to hair growth - something scientists have been studying for quite awhile.

According to Forbes, hair growth is triggered by stem cells underneath your skin. Even after hair loss, the stem cells remain under the scalp. The stem cells must be triggered in order for the hair to grow. Click here to read more...

This discovery won't lead to a cure for baldness...at least not yet. Using this new discovery, researchers will now have to determine if the same triggers used on mice will work on humans. This testing could take years, if not decades. If it works, however, it's highly possible that this could lead to a cure for baldness.

There's a light at the end of tunnel!

Get the Look : Dipped in Color

Aug 13, 2011 at 1:16 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Looking for a way to update your look? Take a cue from Hollywood's leading ladies and add some tie-dye to your tresses!

Lauren Conrad recently debuted her new hair style: color-dipped tips. We love it! It's a fun, funky way to show your personality and transform your hair.

Some stylists will achieve this look with permanent color. We, however, recommend using colored extensions to add instant pizazz! Crazy-colored extensions will last more than a month and are damage-free (and commitment-free!).

For those of you who want to try this trend more permanently, check out this interesting article from Celebuzz.com - it gives you step-by-step instructions on how to "get the look."

Behind the Scenes with TOEx: CosmoProf and the 2011 NAHA Awards

Aug 4, 2011 at 4:50 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Last week, Tony and the team at Tony Odisho Extensions traveled to Las Vegas for PBA Beauty Week. It was an amazing weekend!

We browsed CosmoProf, networked with other industry professionals,
attended the NAHA Awards, and met legendary stylists and educators like
Vivienne Mackinder (see photo).

The NAHAs - short for North American Hairstyling Awards - was our favorite event of the entire weekend. This exceptional award show is like the Grammys for hairstylists, makeup artists, and salon owners. We were blown away by the talent, dedication, and passion of the finalists, presenters, and attendees. If you weren't there, head on over to HairDesignerTV.com to watch a free webcast of the entire show!

Visit our Facebook page to view more behind-the-scenes pictures, or click here to take a look at the official event pictures.

This Week in Hair : Celebrity Transformations

Jul 22, 2011 at 2:15 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Celebrities have the privilege of being able to change their 'do every month, week, or even every day. Since most of us can't afford to splurge on expensive salon services on such a regular basis, we thought it might be nice to live vicariously through our favorite "Hollywood Royals" in our blog this week.

Check out some of this week's sexy (and strange) celebrity hair transformations:

Katy Perry

Back to Blonde

Earlier this summer, Katy colored her locks from black to red. She debuted her new 'do on MTV News Thursday. It's a beautiful blonde...but it doesn't seem to suit Katy, even though it's her natural color. Here's to hoping she'll go "back to black" soon!

Vanessa Hudgens

Crop Shop

Vanessa stepped out with her extra-short (she must have chopped off a few feet of hair!) style earlier this week. Her shaggy pixie cut is for a new movie role...guess it's not a wig, after all! It's definitely not the usual Hollywood starlet hairstyle, but it's refreshing. Rock it, Vanessa!

Robert Pattinson

Comical at Comic-Con

Let's hope this one's for a movie role! Rob Pattinson - star of Twilight and Water for Elephants - is almost as well-known for his hair as he is for his movie roles. We'll be honest...this isn't his best look. The mullet/mohawk is rarely appealing to us (or anyone else, for that matter). We miss your effortless, flowy locks Rob!

Is Gray Hair a "Thing of the Past?"

Jul 15, 2011 at 2:38 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Women (and men) spend countless hours "behind the chair" in hopes of getting rid of one, two, or 2,000 tiny little things...gray hair. Unlike blonde, brown, red or even black hair, gray is difficult to color and becomes more dense as we age.

Anne Kreamer, author of the book "Going Gray," estimated that she spent roughly $65,000 on hair color over a period of 25 years. In an article in MSNBC's "Today Style" Kreamer now says that she regrets all those trips to the salon, and wishes she had that massive amount of money to use for her retirement or her daughter's college fund.

Now, there may be a new way to combat gray hair without spending a fortune. Scientists at New York University's Langone Medical Center have identified the specific proteins that cause gray hair.

NYU researchers found that the lack of WNT protein is a cause of graying hair in mice (the scientists assure us that mouse and human hairs are very similar). Eventually, WNT will likely be added to hair care products and/or supplements in an effort to stop hair from going gray.

In the meantime, men and women across the world will continue to color their hair (or let it grow naturally, as Anne Kreamer eventually did).

What do you think? Is this discovery a blessing or a curse for stylists and clients? Comment below!

Color Me Beautiful - Hair Extensions in the Name of Charity

May 27, 2011 at 2:39 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Ever wonder why people are suddenly sporting "crazy colored" hair extensions?

This trend is becoming much more than just a fashion statement. Women, children, and even some men (yes, men!) have been spotted wearing colored extensions in their hair. The reason behind their rainbow hair is a good one - they're representing their favorite charity!

Celebs love this trend, too. It's a great way to add fun and funky colors to your hair while donating and campaigning for charity.

Here's a list of some popular charities and their coordinating extensions:

RED - Project Ladybug

According to Project Ladybug's Facebook page, The Ladybug Fund is "a new initiative to provide an important resource to seriously ill
pediatric patients and their families as they face lengthy treatment regimens." Dina Manzo, a cast member of reality show The Real Housewives of New Jersey, is the charity's founder and face of the company. Caroline Manzo  and Teresa Guidice - both of Housewives fame - also wear a red extension to support the charity.

PINK - Pink Hair For Hope

Perhaps the most popular color for hair extensions is baby doll pink, largely recognized as the color of the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Pink Hair For Hope has raised more than one million dollars to fight breast cancer and can be found in more than 375 salons.

PURPLE - March For Babies

Developed by the March of Dimes, the March For Babies is a three mile walk in which participants form teams, accept sponsors and donations, and walk in the name of charity. The March For Babies mission is to "improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality." Jaqueline Laurita, also from RHONJ, is a spokesperson for the campaign.

BLUE - Autism Awareness

Throughout the month of April, salons across the country sell and apply blue hair extensions in support of Autism Awareness. The donations go to support many organizations including the National Autistic Society that fund autism awareness, research, prevention, treatments, and advocacy. Actress Holly Robinson Peete supports Autism Awareness and the face behind the Light It Up Blue program.

Hair Trends and DIY Styles: Spring/Summer 2011

Apr 1, 2011 at 3:14 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Every year, we anxiously await the arrival of Spring and Summer.

However, we're not thinking about sun, warm weather, or this year's fashion (well, maybe a little...). You may find yourself asking - Why does the team at Tony Odisho Extensions look forward to Spring and Summer?

New hair trends!

Check out Glamour Magazine's picks for best Spring/Summer hairstyles. They're all fun, flirty, and effortless...we can't wait to recreate them at home!

Frothy, Brushed-Out Curls

The bigger, the better when it comes to this style! Think Jerry Hall circa the 1970's. Starting about three inches below the root, wrap small sections of hair around a 1-inch or smaller curling iron. Brush the curls out to create that over-the-top, fashionably-frizzy "Seventies look." Either pin back the sides or let those curls fly!

Beachy Texture

Who doesn't want to look like they just got off the beach?! Loose waves and sun-kissed strands are key to this style. Shampoo hair and apply a small amount of conditioner. Allow hair to air-dry about 70%, then braid sections of hair (two for loose waves, four for tight). After a few hours, remove the braids, comb using your fingers, and use a salt spray or light texturizing cream for that "just stepped out of the ocean" look.

Slicked-Back and Chic

This androgynous style is sleek, modern, and perfect for someone who doesn't have a ton of time to spend on styling their hair. While we always recommend skipping a day or two between shampoos, it's especially important when trying to achieve this style. Pull hair back and secure hair using a clip or rubber band. Use gel or hairspray to tame frizz and create the "wet" look.

Prim and Proper Ballerina Buns

Taking a cue from Black Swan, ballerina buns are "all the rage" on the runway this season. We think they look best when pulled up as high as possible on the head (instant facelift!). Ir you're more demure, stick to a low bun - they look just as chic. If you're hair is too short to wear in a bun, try extensions or invest in a bun-shaped hair piece!

Carefree Plaits and Braids

Glamour calls this look "hippie chic," and we love it! You can wear braids any time of year, but we they seem to evoke a more playful, feminine, and effortless vibe during warmer months. There are so many ways to wear this trend, too. Our pick: Blow-dry hair upside down to create volume (if it's a full, messy braid you wish to achieve). Sweep to one side and braid, haphazardly, to the ends.

Ombre Opulence

Celebrities are always trying the latest hair trends, especially this one! Featured on leading ladies like Drew Barrymore, Hilary Duff, and Rachel Bilson, ombre color starts dark at the root and gradually lightens at the ends. You can choose natural colors or try pink, yellow, or lilac (like Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, and Gaga). This look can easily be created with extensions, too...ask your stylist to help you create the look!

The Chicago Blizzard of 2011

Feb 4, 2011 at 5:24 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Oh, Snowmageddon...You can't knock us down!

On Tuesday, many Chicagoans (and all other Midwesterners, for that matter) prepared for what was being called "one of the worst snowstorms of all time." Over the next 24 hours we were blasted with heavy winds, thunder, lightning, frigid temperatures, and more than two feet of snow.

We awoke to stranded cars, snow drifts up to five feet or more, and an eerie silence that Chicago is not accustomed to.

Due to our inability to safely travel to our office, Tony Odisho Extensions was closed on Wednesday, February 2nd. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Despite the elements, we were able to re-open on Thursday. Dan braved the blizzard for your extensions...now THAT'S customer service!

Check out some amazing pictures from the third-worst snowstorm ever recorded:

Happy New Year!

Dec 31, 2010 at 1:23 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Wow - we can't believe 2010 is already drawing to a close!

As we approach January 1st, it's time to start thinking about New Year's Resolutions. Some people vow to get in shape, eat right, save money...and others hope to recreate themselves with a new haircut, color, or wardrobe.

What's your New Year's Resolution? If it's a "new you" you're striving for, try hair extensions! Here are our top ten reasons to try Tony Odisho Extensions in 2011:

1) Extensions add instant volume and thickness to fine, limp, and lifeless hair.

2) Extensions can transform a bad haircut into exactly the cut you wanted.

3) When applied and removed correctly, Tony Odisho Extensions are damage-free and can add highlights, lowlights, or funky colors to your hair without changing your natural hair color.

4) If you're trying to grow out your hair, extensions make the transition easier and protect your natural hair from heat and environmental damage.

5) Trying to emulate your favorite celebrity's hairstyle but don't want to wait a long time? Extensions can turn chin-length hair into long, luxurious locks in two hours or less.

6) Extensions hold curl better than fine, thin hair...if you're a fan of dry shampoo and like to skip days between washing but don't want to sacrifice style, try extensions!

7) Attention Brides! Extensions can transform your wedding look!

8) Extensions LAST! When applied and maintained correctly, you can expect to wear your extension for at least 4-6 months.

9) Extensions look and feel natural. No one will know you're wearing them.

10) Extensions improve self-esteem and confidence...this is the BEST reason to try them!

We hope you enjoy the next chapter of your life...Happy 2011!

Hairdressers Against AIDS - December 1st, 2010

Dec 2, 2010 at 4:03 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Wow…what an amazing way for stylists to come together for a great cause!

Each year, December 1st commemorates World AIDS Day. More than 500 hairdressers from across the country teamed up yesterday to launch "Hairdressers Against Aids in the US," a L'Oreal sponsored AIDS advocacy program.

"Hairdressers Against AIDS in the US" is designed to encourage hairdressers and salon professionals to use their power, knowledge, and unique relationships with clients to educate clients and communities on how to prevent the spread of AIDS.

Approximately 56,000 people become infected with HIV each year. AIDS is the leading cause of death for Black women ages 18 to 34, and contrary to popular belief, there is no cure for this debilitating disease.

Stylists, do your part to spread awareness about AIDS. Learn more by clicking here.

How to "Winter Proof" Your Hair

Nov 27, 2010 at 3:23 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

For those of you who live in the Midwest, it's obvious: winter is right around the corner.

Blistering winds, unbearable cold weather, and snow, snow, snow…Although winter brings lots of joy and happiness (holidays, festive parties, family functions), it can also wreak havoc on your hair.

Whether it's frizz you're fighting or damage you're undoing, we've got some great tricks for restoring your dry, brittle hair and protecting it from winter's harsh elements.

Here are our tips for treating your hair during winter:

No Hot Showers!

As tempting as a hot shower may be, avoid them if you can. Hot water opens the hair shaft, and unless you rinse with cool water, it remains open. When you step out of the shower the dry, cold air can damage the open cuticle. We recommend taking warm showers but if you must take a hot shower, be sure to do a quick cool water rinse or spray your hair with a leave-in mist before getting in the shower (try the Ostia Collection's Detangling Mist).

To tame frizz and make hair silky smooth, use a conditioning mask at least once per week. We love our Ostia Conditioning Mask—it was formulated with real vanilla bean and calendula extract, jojoba oil, and sage and wheat protein. It reduces inflammation and redness of the scalp, increases elasticity and strength (an essential part of healthy winter hair), and restores your hair's natural luster and shine. For extra conditioning, apply a generous amount of the mask all over your hair and wrap with saran wrap. Let it sit for 30 minutes, rinse, and style as usual.

Shampoo Less

Central heating and drier air can lead to dry, brittle hair. Shampooing less not only saves you time, but it also saves your hair from innumerable extra blasts with the blow-dryer, heat from curling and flat irons, and hot water. Use a dry shampoo in between washes to absorb excess oil and prevent damage.

If you're blond, nearly any dry shampoo will do. However, if your hair is darker, you'll want to find something that doesn't create a white, powdery film on your hair. We love the Ostia Collection Dry Shampoo- it contains aluminum starch, which absorbs oil without caking (so you can use it for more than one day!) and can be used on any hair color.

Do a Night Treatment

Your hair and skin restore themselves while you sleep. Once a week, try applying a night treatment to your hair before bed. Put your hair in a ponytail, sleep with it in, then shampoo, condition, and rinse the next morning. Your hair will feel awesome…really!

We love using good ole' Moroccan Oil for this kind of treatment. Another great restorative night hair cream is Redken's Real Control Overnight Recovery. Apply a generous amount to the hair, concentrating on the ends and areas that need additional moisture.

Seal and Protect

Aside from doing at-home treatments, you'll also need to apply products designed to protect your hair from winter elements. The best way to do this is to apply a product while the hair is still damp, and before blow-drying. Be sure to choose a product that is designed to protect, restore and rebuild hair while fighting frizz.

The Ostia Collection's Smoothing Polymer contains aloe vera, chamomile, rose hip, and a thermal protectant. Combined into one powerful product, these elements help to fight frizz, soothe and moisturize the hair shaft, replenish hair with vitamins A and C, and protect from environmental aggression and heat. You can even apply a small amount to dry hair to tame flyaways and winter static.

Lady Gaga Stuns New Yorkers in an Ensemble Made of Hair Extensions

Oct 1, 2010 at 2:55 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Lady Gaga and hair extensions- two of our favorite things! We just had to blog about this one…

The ever-changing Lady Gaga surprised guests at the Plaza Hotel on Wednesday night with an impromptu performance at The Oak Room. Even more surprising than her appearance was her outfit- it was constructed entirely out of hair extensions, an over-sized necklace, fishnets, and Alexander McQueen's Armadillo shoes. Interesting combination…uniquely Gaga.

Check out the original article and pictures of the Lady and her outfit here.

Hair Accessories: Our Favorites from 2010

Sep 23, 2010 at 2:17 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Hollywood starlets and music industry divas aren't just dressing up their hair with extensions…they're adding hair accessories to "costume their coifs!"

Up-dos and special occasion styles can become rather redundant to women who wear them often (especially celebrities!). Hair accessories allow women to dress up their ‘do in a fun, unique way.

Here are our picks for this year's best hair accessories:

Feathers

Generally, there are two types of feathers that make beautiful hair accessories- the ones that lay flat on your head, curving to fit the same and the ones that seem to be floating beside your hair. They're both simply stunning!

Vintage-y Brooches

Nothing says classic more than a beautiful jeweled brooch. They add a touch of romance but still look modern. The best part is they're versatile…after you've worn it in your hair, pin it on a belt or sash for added sparkle!

Flowers

Although this look used to be reserved for brides, it's becoming more popular for everyday looks. You can accessorize your outfit by choosing one that matches your ensemble, or add a pop of color to work wear.

Fur

These hair accessories seem more and more practical as cold weather approaches! Some women choose to add a touch of "sass" with single fur pom-poms while others sport a fur-lined headband.

Jeweled Headbands

A little bit hippie, a lot chic! Jeweled headbands can be skinny and adorned with rhinestones, thick with colored crystals, or in your favorite shape. They're simple enough to wear to work but can still dress up an outfit.

Every Hair Has A Story: What a Doctor can tell by studying your strands

Sep 10, 2010 at 2:09 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Much more than just an accessory, a person's hair expresses personality and fashion choices, dictates his or her mood, and can even reveal important health issues.

You can tell a lot about a person by checking out their hair. And now, doctors can too.

A recent study published in the journal "Stress" shows that high levels of cortisol in the hair shaft may raise the risk of heart attack. Men and women who suffered from heart attacks had higher levels of cortisol in their hair shafts, the report shows. Until now, there was no direct evidence supporting the connection between stress and heart disease.

Cortisol—a stress hormone—can be measured in blood, urine, and saliva but is most accurately measured in hair. Stan VanUum, MD, PhD, an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario said the study proved that hair cortisol levels were a better indicator of heart disease than high blood pressure, smoking, and high cholesterol. Over time, cortisol can cause "increases in blood pressure, blood sugar, body fat, and blood clotting- all of which are known risk factors for heart attack," VanUum said on WebMD.com.

This discovery is a breakthrough in the medical diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

In an article featured on WebMD.com, Redford Williams, MD (director of the Behavioral Medicine Research Center at Duke University) said more research is needed before cortisol is routinely measured using strands of hair. Williams emphasizes the importance of properly managing stress to reduce cortisol levels.

Who knew hair could be so revealing? Long story short: don't stress! Easier said than done…we know.

A Blast from the Past: Our "Tribute" to Labor Day

Sep 3, 2010 at 3:13 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Happy Holiday weekend!

Labor Day- a concept derived from the Labor Movement- originated in 1882 and celebrates the dedication and achievements of American workers.

What better way to "ring in" the holiday weekend than with a blast from the past…in hair trends!

Check out some our favorite hairstyles from the 1880s and on:

This half-up, half-down style was popular during the early 1880s. The modern alternative (shown) has becoming increasingly popular for weddings, on runways, and even for daily ‘dos.

This classic, up swept style of the 1900s often featured a small bun at the back of the head and showcased natural hair texture. Today, this style is one of the most requested up-dos (think chignon) in salons around the world.

Finger waves and the bob (as seen in this picture) first became popular in the 1920s, especially amongst flappers and fashionistas. Short hair became increasingly popular for women during this time. Today stars like Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson, and Gwen Stefani sport this style on the red carpet and in films.

Who doesn't recognize this style? Marilyn Monroe- THE iconic blonde- made this short, curly style popular during the 1950s. It is classic, elegant, and sexy, and is recreated in many ways today (even stars like Lindsay Lohan and Megan Fox have tried it!).

Oh, the 80s…this was the era of big hair! From the mullet to the Farrah Fawcett flip, the bigger the hair the better. We love long hair that's full of body but we'd prefer if some 80's styles were left, well, in the 80s. No recreation necessary!

The Wonderful World of Wedding Season

Aug 27, 2010 at 10:52 AM by Tony Odisho Extensions

Some may call this time of year summer…stylists and makeup artists also call it wedding season! Bridal parties create huge revenues for some salons and spas, and stylists are always looking for fresh, new updos to create on brides, mothers, and attendants. Many say that creating a one-of-a-kind look for a bride on her wedding day is arguably one of the most rewarding experiences of a stylists' career.

The team at Tony Odisho Extensions recently introduced new Advanced Technique Courses, and we chose Bridal and Special Occasion Styling to be the first. It was one of the largest classes we've hosted- and the creative juices were flowing!

Our instructor Joanna is well known in Chicago for her ability to create beautiful updos in half an hour or less. She is booked nearly every weekend and signs bridal contracts up to a year in advance. One of her stories in particular stunned all the students and stylists- she once did 45 updos in one day…for one wedding!

Here's a sneak peek at two of the styles Joanna expertly designed:

Style 1: The Braided Beehive

This style took Joanna 32 minutes to create. Her secret is to tease, tease, tease…then tease some more! She crossed and secured the braids with standard bobby pins. Although our model's hair was long and full, Joanna ensured us that you can create this style with short hair- just use foam to create fullness!

Style 2: 2010's Grecian Goddess

More romantic than the first, this beautiful updo highlights the model's hair color and face shape. Again, use foam to create the base if you're working with short hair. Joanna did not use a curling iron during the class. Instead, she used boar hairbrushes, a blowdryer, and a can of hairspray. The end result? Amazing!

At the end of the class, the students/stylists all agreed that they were totally inspired by the unique updos and time-saving tricks they learned. Our next Bridal and Special Occasion Styling Class will feature more romantic and soft styles- think curls, gentle waves, and deconstructed ‘dos.

We hope to see you there!

Celebrity Hair Impersonations: 100 American salons reveal their most requested hairstyles

Aug 20, 2010 at 4:44 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

It's no secret that Hollywood's hottest stars have the ability to influence American women- at least in regard to their hair.

In a recent Elle Magazine article, a selection of top salons and sought-after stylists shared the Hollywood looks their clients crave. Is your favorite celebrity hairstyle on the list? Although we're partial to long, luscious locks (we are a hair extension company, after all!) all of Elle's chosen styles are simply stunning. Check out our favorites:

Long & Straight

Winner: Reese Witherspoon
Unlike other long, straight cuts Reese's face-framing style is bouncy and full of body. To avoid stringy or lifeless ends, blow-dry hair with your head turned upside down, then finish with a round brush and light flat iron. Add a shine serum to make hair look extra healthy.

Runner-Up: Beyonce
Beyonce's hair is always ah-mazing…but this sleek, sophisticated style takes the cake. The mix of face-framing pieces and long layers makes this style easy to pull off and to maintain. Plus, it's virtually frizz-free. We're jealous!

The Wave

Winner: Kim Kardashian
Can you say "bombshell?" Kim's subtle waves rival her famous curvy physique! According to the mag, this is how you create the look at home: wrap small sections of hair around a 1.5-inch curling iron and brush gently. Finish with your favorite styling mist.

Runner-Up: Taylor Swift
What's not to love about this country-cutie's golden locks? Her natural, playful curls can easily transition from a day to nighttime look. They're fun and flirty without looking overdone…just like Taylor.

Color

Jennifer Aniston
Aniston's sun-kissed color has become an American staple. Let's face it- it's gorgeous! She has the perfect mix of beachy blonde, golden highlights, and light brown lowlights. This color looks natural and sophisticated with a touch of fun. We'll be toting this picture to our next color appointment!

Christina Hendricks
We've gone "Mad" over this star's strawberry shade! Against porcelain skin, this shade of red screams sexy. It's unique, lively, and timeless. Va-va-voom!

Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez has found her perfect color- caramel! Women across the country are swooning over this beautiful shade of brown, and we don't blame them.

Sandra Bullock
Chestnut suits her well! Sandra's brown locks are absolutely stunning.

Sarah Jessica Parker
Some people don't care for SJP's color (they say it looks too grown out) but we love it! The gradual honey color brightens her face, adds depth and shine, and is simply fabulous.

Reese Witherspoon
Champagne, anyone? Reese made the list twice this year, and for good reason. Her pale blonde color doesn't look fried or damaged (as some blondes do) and blends beautifully with her skin tone.

Dry Shampoo: The story behind the hype of this popular hair product

Aug 12, 2010 at 4:59 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

A recent Women's Health Magazine article titled "Are You Dirtier than you Think" exposed the truth behind showering, shampooing, and such— modern American women aren't as squeaky-clean as you might think.

According to the study, 39 percent of women wash their hair every day and only 31 percent shower daily. As unhygienic as this may sound, excessive showering and shampooing can wreak havoc on your hair. Overwashing strips hair of natural oils, causing breakage and dullness.

Enter one of the beauty industry's best-kept secrets: dry shampoo! Dry shampoo is designed to work just as effectively as traditional shampoos, minus water (and damage). Many dry shampoos contain a powder that absorbs excess oil and sebum without weighing hair down.

The first aerosol dry shampoos were created in the 70's, and some can still be found at your local drugstore (the next time you're at Walgreen's, look for the patriotic Pssst! cans). Celebrity stylists and big-name beauty brands recently began introducing dry shampoos into their product lines.

Today, consumers can find Frederic Fekkai's Au Naturel Dry Shampoo at luxury department stores like Nordstrom and Sephora, or Tresemme's Fresh Start Dry Shampoo at mass retail stores like Target and Walmart. Our favorite (of course) is our signature dry shampoo from the Ostia Collection—free of talc powder, this invisible dry shampoo can be used on natural hair or extensions of any color.

Dry shampoo reduces the time it takes to get ready, protects and preserves color-treated and natural hair, and comes in a variety of scents, formulas, and colors. In our humble opinion, there's no reason not to try it…unless you prefer the "I just rolled out of bed/didn't shower" look. We hope you choose the dry shampoo (as does your neighbor on the train).

Ready, set, spray. A shampoo that works without water…what will we invent next?!

Hollywood Hair Extensions

Aug 3, 2010 at 3:22 PM by Tony Odisho Extensions

What do Fergie, Kim Kardashian, and Joan Rivers have in common? Hair extensions!

Reality TV star Kate Gosselin recently spent more than 20 hours (!) in her stylist's chair as he meticulously attached a full head of custom hair extensions. Similarly, Miley Cyrus reportedly shelled out $24,000 for new hair extensions earlier this year.

Celebrities and dignitaries alike have all joined in this hair trend…so much so that many online media sites and beauty reporters claim ALL female celebrities sport extensions. Some celebrities have been wearing extensions for years and are so attached to them that they're rarely, if ever, spotted without them (does Lindsay Lohan ring a bell, anyone?).

Do you think you can spot the celebs that sport extensions? Test your ability by taking this fun quiz!
